Day 3 in Chiang Mai

We booked a day tour to Chiang Rai today, which is further up north from Chiang Mai, about 3 hours drive. On the way, we stopped at several places for toilet breaks as well as to stretch our legs. First stop was a hotspring. I tot we could jump in for a dip but turned out we can only cook egg steamboat there as the hotspring is too small for people to swim. Anyway...the water is about 90 degree celcius, certainly I don't want myself to be boiled!

After about two hours drive from the hotspring, we arrived at Chiang Rai. Another stop for toilet break plus a visit to a ruined temple which I didn't catch its' name.

We headed to Golden Triangle, an illicit opium-producing area and it is also a place where Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meets at the intersection of the Mekong River...flowing all the way to Vietnam. We took a boat ride along the Mekong river, passing by Myanmar border and then stopover at a small village in Laos for shopping.

After the 'nothing to brag about' lunch, we headed to Mae Sai, a border town between Thailand and Myanmar. We were told not to cross the border as we will have problem coming back. The place was packed!! Some of the goods for sale includes foodstuffs, clothing, sunglasses, watches, antiques, jades, etc. I just got myself a nice little bag here for RM6!

Our final stop was the Karen Long Neck Village, where we get to see 4 different tribes. Main attraction was the long neck tribe. All the ladies are required to put on the brass thing on the neck from 5-year old and keep on adding to a maximum of 27 rings. The brass is really heavy and that is why the weight somehow pushes the shouder down, thus creating a long neck. Worst things is, they need to heat up the brass before coiling it on the neck, as a result, they have burnt scar on their neck. We were told that the reasons they put the brass on the neck were to protect themselves from tiger (as they are living in the mountain) as well as spirit.

So many pretty little girls in the village, I felt so sad for them cos they don't leave their village at all. Practically, they born there, live there, die there. If only I can adopt and bring one home...but the tour guide told us that it's not that easy.

They were having a New Year celebration so they cooked a feast! Very very mean of me to say this, but the smell of the food makes me want to puke! I saw one whole pot of pork covered with oil!!! But they were happily chomping down the food. I guess to them, it's a very very good meal.

The journey back to Chiang Mai took us 3 hours. Long and tiring. For dinner, we decided to go back to the restaurant we went on the first night, the one in front of our hotel since it's cheap and food was not too bad. This meal also costs us about RM60+

We went to the Night Bazaar again after dinner for last minute shopping as we are heading back to KL tomorrow morning. Hmm..maybe I should take a picture of what i bought from Chiang Mai huh? After that we stopped by to Heaven Hut for foot massage again.....aaaahhh...dat completes my trip.
