PJ Old Town, a place I frequently go for dinner but only for Bak Kut Teh. We decided to have something different for a change and so Hubby suggested the forever-packed Veng Soon (same row as Public Bank) which offers Claypot Chicken Rice and double-boiled soup. Sadly, it was closed on that day. Hubby suddenly recalled that there is also another place selling claypot chicken rice which is located right across the main road from the PJ Old Town wet market. As you walk towards the shop, you will see an uncle busy manning the stove full of claypots. At the other corner, there is a lady manning the veggie and soup section. I was busy looking high and low for the name of this shop. I asked the uncle for the name of his stall he said none. I thought he could not understand my question and thus reconfirmed with his wife. She told me that people only call them as PJ Old Town Claypot Chicken Rice, ohh, she also stressed the key word 'opposite wet market'.
We ordered one double-boiled coconut with chicken to share. Quite a huge coconut and it came with lots of wolfberries floating on top. First spoonful was tasteless...but wait! You need to put your spoon in and give it a good stir.
A very generous portion of various Chinese herbs with only a slight hint of tongkwai (angelica roots). Soup was really clear and sweet. We both enjoyed it so much until we drank till the last drop. Mmmm......I don't mind coming here just for the soup. Hubby suspected it would be laden with MSG but I thought that's a silly thing to do as it defeat the purpose of putting in so much ingredients as well as hours to double boiled it. True enough, we didn't feel thirsty after the meal.
The Claypot Chicken rice came in a generous portion too. The pieces of chicken drumsticks was well-marinated and it was so smooth and tasty. Together with the salted fish and chinese sausages, this pot of rice tasted wonderful! Personally I felt the rice here is much nicer than Koon Kee and Busy Corner. I will definately be back.
Even the plate of Choy Sum tasted good. Drizzled with oyster sauce and garlic oil, it was slightly oily but I didn't mind at all cos the veggies was fresh and crunchy.
Total damage only RM19....so cheap isn't it? I will definately come back soon!

Oooh, the coconut chicken soup looks so yummy...haven't had this in like over 10 years... :(
yeah and because everyone puts wolfberry even in fried vege, the price is jacked up! >.< ( lukily mom bought 1 kg ady)
haha i also dunno wat vege. but it seems like a simple stir fried vege dish. Golden crab ady, now golden vege. Luckily din order! Neh the stall sell portuegis ikan bakar facing one of the entrance to chinatown.
The Veng Soon is much, much better, believe me. This stall is where Veng Soon used to be.
I am gonna HUNT down this place tonite :-) Thanks Precious_Pea :-)
Happy Hunting Julian...am going to that area for Bak Kut Teh tonite too!
Me will be in the vicinity at 7pm, hope to stumble onto you!! Maybe BKT for me, hmmm... :-) But I'd have to be in disguise, I RARELY eat bkt outside of Klang being a Loyalist!!
Turned out to be good, but I prefer Berkeley Garden / Klang's NUMBER ONE CLAYPOT CHICKEN RICE :-) Yes, they "dare" call themselves that!
My review of Jalan Othman "pasar" claypot chicken rice..
