I was stuffed from our heavy dinner but bro-in-law and hubby were keen for supper. I decided to tag along as I wouldn't want to miss out on anything good. Since it was already 11 p.m., most of the shops were closed. It didn't matter to us as we were searching for 'Dai Pai Dong' or open-air food stall. While we were walking, we came across a food stall selling lots of 'siu sik' or small dishes such as the famous curry fish ball, pan fried stuffed veggies (yong tau foo), curry beef stomach and tripe, pork dumpling, cuttlefish, chicken wings, pig's spare-parts and various fried meatballs. I have tried the curry fishballs before and we didn't like it at all but since bro-in-law wanted to try, we bought one skewer to share. As expected, it tasted horrible. Basically, it was like eating flour dough heavily coated with thick, powdery curry gravy. We ended up swallowing one fishball each and the rest? In the rubbish bin lor!!
We almost gave up looking for a decent supper when suddenly, we walked pass a dark and narrow alley with a few tables and chairs. An old uncle immediately came to serve us, convincing us that their pork bone congee is too good to be missed! Immediately, it reminded me of "Healing Hands III", a famous TVB medical drama series, whereby the leading actor and actress (before they were dating) always bumped into each other after their night shift and ended up having pork bone congee which they kept raving about in the series. I was really tempted to try and luckily, I didn't need to convince my two eating companions at all as they were eager to try as well.
A big bowl of pork bones congee only costs HKD20. The old uncle didn't lie to us at all as the congee was really too good to be missed! The pork bones were marinated with salt before boiled and the meat was still tender and sweet. Dried flounder and peanuts were added into the congee which further enhance the sweetness and aroma of the smooth congee. Fresh lettuces were added for some extra crunch. Hot and tasty congee on a cool windy night at the roadside...ahhh...what a perfect supper!
Sweet desserts are available too. Sadly I found out that I did not take any picture of my red bean soup which tasted absolutely wonderful with added top quality mandarin orange skin (chan pei). Probably cos I was too excited with my congee...ahhh...maybe next time!

Haven't seen the TVB series but that is one delicious-looking bowl of congee... I can almost smell the steam wafting from the bowl... :D
jason: I intend to make it myself one fine day :) Shouldn't be too difficult.
ling239: Err..more porridge to come..hehehe...but all the porridge we had in HK were really good.
mimi: Not the same stall cos it was never mentioned in the series. But they kept saying about pork bone congee so it must be this version.
kenny: Oh yes, nice aroma too. Mmmm....wish I could have a bowl now.
And that's only Day 1? How many more meals to go? Torture torture.
me shall wait for your next delicious post^^ I *heart* ya blog
i spy... 7-11 behind!!! did u go in and get those microwavable instant rice and vitasoy?? :) i know i know, with all the nice hawker food around, 7-11 will be the last place on ur mind ;p
Ahhh...that pork bone porridge is the classic "chai yu fah sang chok"..in this case he added pork bones..din get any dried 'chai yu' in HK to bring back and whip ur own porridge?
Penang don't have that porridge anymore. My mom used to eat it when she was a teen. Now she almost 60 ady :P and that kind of porridge is no where to be seen.
Yummmm... I can almost taste it from your post! There's a shop near my house selling steamboat with an option of using pork bone soup (RM12 for the soup alone) and the soup is really good! So I can imagine what the porridge will taste like... *swallows saliva*
Maybe I shld buy their soup home and boil porridge with it...
You guys really have the nose for good food le...
yum yum! looks delicious, u gvn me hunger pangs girl!
heheh...one dish at a time!
No vegies for me please..! ;)
so cool eh, the characters in healing hands?? hehe...even a bowl of congee was made "cool"! perhaps it's the rice they use or we are used to the canto-style, hong kong porridge is always good! :)
tummythoz: Errr...actually still a lot more to go, i hope can finish by end of the month (very unlikely with the pace am blogging nowadays).
kazumi: Hehehe...thanks and a big welcome to my blog! :)
jun: We would have ended in 7-11 hogging around the microwave if we didn't discover the congee. Hehe...bro-in-law said that would be the last resort. Of course Vitasoy is a must...slurps!
barbie: Ooo..what steamboat shop is that? Would love to try. Maybe next time bring a small tub of rice and dump it into the soup to make pork bone congee steamboat. Hehe...good idea?
cumi & ciki: Hehehe! I am hungry myself too just looking at the congee.
wmw: U jelak oledi eh?
mamabok: I don't like veggie in congee too but this one actually tastes quite good.
nic: Yalor..they so cool but at the same time a bit fake. How can doctors no need to rest and always sit in pubs chatting? I tot they not supposed to drink? And also so so glamour. And where got so pretty and handsome doctors housed under one hospital. But i still heart that series. LOL!
It's a place called "World of Dim Sum" (they serve dim sum in the morning, hence the name), located in Cheras. At nite, they serve steamboat. But other than that soup, the other food is so-so. Even the steamboat food portion is very small. We only eat there cos we like to drink that soup and they refill it. Hehehe.... As for your suggestion, hmmm... maybe can try and hope I don't get thrown out by the owner.... ;p
mmmmmmm I love porridge in HK. Have not had a bad bowl of porridge in HK ever. This one looks great! Milk pudding?

hopefully i can find the same stall, n help u to take the picture of red bean soup!
barbie: You will never know, maybe after seeing you cooking porridge with their broth, the next visit they might already offering pork bone porridge as soup base. Hehehe.
paprika: Agree. So far, yet to come across any bad congee. Milk pudding in coming posts, i even tried buffalo milk pudding too.
NJoe: Actually it depends where you stay. Our area not much eateries at night. The security guard at the hotel recommended us to take MTR to YauMaTei or Mongkok but we were too lazy.
cokeworld: I didn't get any dried flounder (chai yu) back cos it never cross my mind. Maybe next time i should. I only bought a small piece of Kam Wah Bacon...yet to whip up any dishes with it yet. Hehehe..mopping is good. Exercise mah.
jackson: Am sure you will have a blast time pigging out in HK.
with all these steaming hot bone soup rice + pierced balls you did much heavy duty after 12 right to rebalance for more tommorow , thats the way !
