These photos were taken at Macau Airport during my last trip there in March. We arrived Macau from Hong Kong in late evening. We tried to search for some freshly baked ones in the City, but sadly it was all sold out. Luckily, the airport's cafe do have freshly baked ones too, but of course, at a much higher price than those bakeries outside.
Albeit the premium price, it was worth every dollar paid. The multiple layer pastry was flaky and buttery in taste. In contrast with the pastry, the custard filling is smooth, soft and rich in flavour. I simply love the burnt caramelised bits!
Heavenly good! A must try when one visits Macau!
There is a reason for this post. I will be heading to Macau for the weekend, so yes, this is what I will be having for the next couple of days. Yumzz..Portugese Tart HERE I COME!!!!

wandering chopsticks: Thank you. Yes...i did have lots of fun. Will post on my trip soon.
mimid3vils: Err...I might be bias but nothing close to King's.

mamabok and cooking ninja: Maybe you can try baking some at home? I am tempted to try.
ling239: Thank you.
FBB: According to Wikipedia, yes, the tart was created before the 18th centure by Catholic Sisters at the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon. But those in Macau originated from Lord Stow's Cafe which has been modified using techniques of making English custard tarts.
simply gluten free: I had so many tarts..i think that should fix my craving for the next one year.
jun: Nolah..not yet although that's my mission! Hahaha!
Christine: Hehe..good hor? I also ta-pao-ed some back.
have a great time. When you get there, I would love to have you get the recipe for this as well :). BTW, I am hosting a ONE DISH MEAL EVENT, I would love for you to participate. The details are in my site. Looking forward to an entry from you.
Hi archana! I do have the recipe for Portugese tart but yet to try it out cos am not good in baking pastry stuff. Your One Dish Meal Event sounds interesting. Will think of something to participate. Thanks for the invitation.
hi, can you bring the egg tarts with you in the airplane?? i'm thinking of buying some as take home gifts for my family in philippines when i go there soon. thanks.
Hi Carlota,
Yes, they do allowed. I brought back 2 boxes few days ago and no prob at all. But do note that it should be consumed within 2 days otherwise the pastry will turn soggy.
Thanks Pea. I'm sure it will not take more than a day before egg tart will be eaten in our house. aheehh. have a great day.
