My New Hobby....FISHING!

After our discovery two months back during an evening stroll along one of the lakes in Setia Alam, Hubby and I embarked on a new hobby: Fishing!!
1

Hubby bought me a pink fishing rod whereas he got himself a blue. He invested quite a bit in getting the accessories such as different types of hook, floats and baits. I look forward to weekend as whenever we are free, we will spend 2 hours at the lake. I was always excited and hopeful, armed with my camera so that I could capture my first catch. On our first visit, we both each caught a plastic bag and went home empty handed. From then on, we have tried using different baits like prawns, grounded worm powder and live worms but still return home empty handed, so much so, the determination and the excitement began to fade. And during our last fishing trip, I did not even bring along my camera as I already anticipated we will return home empty handed and true enough, we did.

Hubby @ 5.30 p.m. : Fishy fishy...where are you????
2

Hubby @ 7 p.m.: Grrr...stupid fish....another 5 mins and that's it!

Yesterday my Makan (Eating) Gang spent a 'food-full' day at my place (details in another post) and we brought them to have pre-dinner drink at a cafe nearby. We spotted a few Indonesian girls fishing at the lake and on the way back, we decided to make a stop to see if they have any luck. We were dumbstrucked when we saw the girls fishing out at an average rate of 1 tilapia per minute. Don't believe me, look at her pail of tilapias!! Although those are baby tilapias, she said that it is delicious especially when deep fried.

She was kind enough to let me try my luck and guess what? I caught my very first fish in less than a minute! I was so excited and jumping with joy. And I was SO glad that I have my camera with me.
4

Although this was my first catch, I contributed it to their dinner. Must be extra delicious ...*grin*
5

Now now...I think there is definitely something wrong with our method, probably the way Hubby hooked the baits. Now that my confidence has been restored, I will be back soon, DEFINITELY!

Hi

I've always enjoyed your articles on food. Interesting that of all things you picked up fishing, one of my pet hobbies. haha

Not too sure what sorta fishes there are in the lake, but a good method to catch any fish would be to hand out some free offerings first, e.g. leftover bread. If there are fishes around, they will definitely come out for freee food. Then you can casually hook a lil piece on your lil hook and cast it among your free offerings! sneaky but effective. If you are interested to know more, can always visit http://www.fishing.net.my/forum/default.asp for tips etc. :) good luck n don't give up!

i love fishing too, but find the fishes in malaysia too clever. the ones in canada (pike, pickerel) r trusting n easy to catch but here, with the scorching sun n their 'streetwise' ways, fishing is hard work n the fish r not easy to catch. i agree with joe--we shd let the smaller fish go (but sometimes, esp ocean fish, r too damaged by the hook) so they can breed.

Pam: Hahaha..thanks! I pray for the same too.

sze guan: Thanks for leaving me a comment. As far as i know, this pond has got tilapia, haruan and another white fish. I am a registered member of the forum too but I am just a beginner and the members there are way too 'pro' for me. But i do wish that i could join them one day for fishing trips.

NJoe: With the food price increase, maybe I should start my own pond rearing tilapias that i catch. Good idea right?

mochasourcream: You like fishing too?? Where do you normally go??

terri: I am going to try my luck in Melbourne and Gold Coast to see if their fishes are dumb or smart ;). I do agree that those fishes are way too small to be eaten but then again, i guess these Indons are happy enuff to have free fish for dinner. I think at the rate they are going, sooner or later, there aren't any fish left in the pond. Sigh...

mochasourcream: Read your post..wow...that trip to Pulau Pemanggil sure a memorable one. So sweet leh.

fbb: There are lots of ponds in Setia Alam, er..but will you drive all the way here?

cumi & ciki: Gaya also no use, fails to attract any fish. :(

I hv heard that fishing can be addictive once ppl get the hang of it! Sounds like that is happening to u.

Wait. Why didn't you ask those girls for tips so you'd know for next time? I don't fish but I spent my childhood summers tagging along with my daddy when he does. He excitedly told me of a recent fishing trip where he caught 150 fishies!

tigerfish said...

Oops, seems that I'm under attack here. You mentioned "fish"..."stupid fish"...isn't it? :p

But at least, I made it to your fav past time. LOL!

Precious Pea said...

jason: Actually he was a bit grumpy towards the end of each trip. Disappointed i guess.

mimid3vils: But the girls told me that this size is tastier and sweeter. Dunno how true but personally i felt that they should not catch these small fishes as the pond will ended up fishless one day.

daphne: Aii...hand itching now.

wandering chopsticks: But they using earthworms like we did. Sigh..our luck i guess. Wow! 150 fishes!! I remembered you did blogged about it last month right?

tigerfish: Hahaha..errmm..and I think I am in love with you, my dear fish.

When's our turn ;o)?

whoa..envy ur half retiring life lar

ling239 said...

maybe they use diff type of earthworms.... hahahaaaaa.. :p

Peb said...

Congrats!! Now for fish recipes!!

sze guan said...

haha.. don't despair, you just need to try till you get the combination right. Since earthworm works, guess you can stick with that. Maybe try using smaller sharper spade hooks (aka hooks with no rings like the ones the indonesian sisters are using)and try to tie it the way they did.e.g. if they used floats, you use floats. if they used sinkers/weights you use weights too. oh, the timing and place to cast to is important too- try the place the indonesians were fishing.haha. And lastly, good luck! feel free to browse around tt forum ba, can pick up lotsa basic tips and advice, just need to ask :)

Precious Pea said...

wmw: I dunno wor..seems like Jackson also can't make time for us..sigh. Never mind la..we three girls go ahead?? I will facebook you to arrange.

kampungboycitygal: Aii...old oledi, priority also different.

ling239: We bought big juicy earthworms but i guess the fish prefers freshly dug ones.

peb: Hahaha....good idea. I should think of a recipe for the fish that i am going to catch. Assam steamed?

sze guan: Thanks for the tips. Where do you normally fish?

sze guan said...

Hmm..havent been fishing for a while cos now in SG where you can get fined for fishing at d wrong places.haha. So have to wait till i go home to my beloved Ipoh for fishing and horfun. =)

Came across your blog via "Living in food heaven", and my place"Mutiara Bukit Raja" is so close to your place" Setia Alam". Every morning I will jogging at the garden there. Can you believe it that i saw a huge lizard (like aligator) in this lake !!! You have to be careful when you are there..
