Finally, the finale to my series of Krabi post. This post will focus on my food discovery in Ao Nang on my last day in Krabi. Most of the Caucasian tourists love to hang around in Ao Nang, so much so it reminded me of Patong Beach in Phuket and Kuta in Bali. Here, you will find many eateries and cafes offering Western dishes. Although this place is more vibrant and livelier, I wasn't too happy with the lack of local offerings as compared to Krabi town.
As I walked along the main street, I was curious as each of those local men sitting at the roadside (they are taxi drivers waiting for customers) were holding a bowl of iced drink.
Curiousity didn't kill the cat.
Curiosity led me to this great discovery! A guy on motorcycle went around selling this bowl of iced drink at only RM1 per bowl. Due to language barrier, I couldn't find out the exact name of this dessert. There were something black at the bottom, lots of iced cubes in the middle and topped with brown sugar.
After a good stir, I found out that the bottom black stuff were actually grass jelly or cincau. I love the texture of the grass jelly; soft yet chewy. Slightly sweet for me but luckily I had some water with me to dilute it a little. I thought it would be better to serve it with shaved ice. No complain cos with the warm weather, the ice melted quite quickly. It was a very simple dessert yet perfect on a hot afternoon. I wanted a second serving but that guy was gone.
For dinner, we went around searching for local Thai restaurant but sadly there were none! We finally settled for Sabai-Sabai Terrace, a restaurant in Best Western Hotel. I could say, almost 80% of the diners were Caucasian tourists. Now that you know how much I love street food, you must be wondering how I could ended up having dinner at a hotel restaurant, right?
Actually the food display caught our attention. Seafood basket for 650 Baht and it consists of one big seabass, one big octopus, large prawns, mussels and a crab. I find it pretty good deal, afterall, don't forget that this is a hotel restaurant.
We had all our seafood grilled and it was served with chilli sauce and butter sauce. Everything was grilled perfectly. Very satisfied.
After having deep sea seabass that I caught for lunch, I took a bite of this and never to touch it again. From the mushy soft texture, we could tell that this seabass was different than the one we had in the afternoon. It didn't have the distintive sweet fish flavour although this was quite fresh too. I had the best and most memorable seabass for lunch, so I guess it will be difficult for any other seabass to beat that.
Hubby couldn't resist the giant blood cockles. 80 Baht for 5 big clams, good deal right? It was fresh and the chunky flesh! Hubby was very happy.
After the wonderful dinner, we took a stroll along the beach when I spotted people selling Khom Fai or hot-air paper lantern. They coaxed us into buying one for 100 Baht. "Send your wishes to heaven", they said.
I was given a marker pen to write down my wishes. The first wish that came to my mind was "To be happy always". I thought I should make two wishes instead of one, so my second wish was actually "to get whatever I wish for". Hubby said I was too greedy but I insisted. By the time I wanted to continue with my writing, I was surrounded by curious passerby. All waiting to see what I wish for. Gosh...it would be embarrassing to put my second wish down so I have no choice but to choose my third wish...to be healthy. So tada...this was what I sent to heaven.
I shouldn't be greedy as I am so blessed to have such a wonderful and compatible travel companion....ok, make it lifetime travel companion!
Off to heaven!
I definitely enjoyed Krabi very much, so much so, I find it way better than Bali and Phuket. It will be one of my most memorable trip; the yummy local delicacies, the Phi-Phi island trip, the deepfried insects and the giant seabass that I caught.
For sure, I will be back to Krabi soon.

Hello,
Just discovered your blog and I've got a question about Krabi and Ao Nang. I was wondering how far Ao Nang and Krabi are within each other. I'm really keen on experiencing the markets and street food but it seems like all of that is in Krabi town instead of Ao Nang, which is where I'm staying at. Do you know if there's any kind of night market in Ao Nang?
Thanks!
