I was supposed to meet up with my floggers sistas for Hairy Crab when Boolicious called and told me if I mind trying out a new place instead. Knowing how much I love Thai Street Food and Braised Trotter Rice, she excitedly told me that I don't have to travel all the way to Thailand anymore as Hatyai Street located in One Bangsar serves just that! Barely a month old, Hatyai Street took over Montien's spot with a very unique concept, yes yes, they offer Thai street food but ahem, in high class area. The moment I walked into the restaurant, a familiar aroma greeted me. "SO THAI", I exclaimed.
A set of condiments was placed on each table, a familiar sight when you dine in Thailand. "SO THAI", again I exclaimed. But of course, the sauces are more catered to Malaysian tastebud as usually in Thailand, you will find a jar of pickled chillies, a jar of sugar, a jar of chili flakes and a jar of hot & sour chili sauce. Here, you will only find chili sauce, both in green and red. Most importantly, where is the bottle of fish sauce?
There is a front kitchen located right at the entrance of the restaurant and a huge pot of braised trotter was lying on the strainer, waiting to be ordered and savoured. The method cooked and displayed look exactly like what I find in Thailand. Am impressed!
One whole trotter costs RM45 and they do have smaller cut portion at around RM20 plus (can't remember the exact price) and individual portion that comes with rice at less than RM15. We were gluttony and hungry, so four of us ordered one whole trotter to share. It came with braised eggs as well. I noticed that the gravy is thick and sweet, whereas those in Thailand is light and watery..almost like Teochew Bak Kut Teh soup. And when I dug into the preserved vegetables, I found that they used mui choy (sweet) instead of ham choy (salted). This dish tasted more like Chinese Mui Choy Trotter than Thai Braised Trotter. Nevertheless, it tastes very good in its own way especially when the gravy is drizzled onto white rice. The texture of the pork skin was just right; soft yet chewy with tender meat attached to it. But I advised this is strictly to those who enjoy eating pork fats, otherwise it could be a big turn off.
You will be amazed with us 4 ladies, we actually ordered another whole Crispy Pork Knuckle (RM45). Served with blended green chili sauce and kicap manis (sweet soy), the dish also came with a complimentary bowl of hot and sour soup. The skin was crispy and goes really well with the dipping sauce. Personally, I love gravy hence I find the braised version tastier although it didn't look like the real thing.
Pardon my ignorance, I have never heard of Thai laksa until I tried this. Being a first timer and nothing to compare to, I find it quite tasty. There are bits of mashed fish meat in the very light tangy soup, it almost tasted like assam laksa mix with curry laksa. It came with lots of sliced veggies, making this dish lighter and ahem, healthier despite drowning in coconut milk. I didn't like the soft lumpy vermicelli it was served with, but then again, it might have turned lumpy since it has to be passed around for photo taking session, ahem.
Mango Kerabu served with salted egg and crispy dried shrimps (RM12) was quite unique. Never seen mango salad served with salted egg before. It was tasty but would prefer the mango to be less soggy. There is also another version served with pork cracker...ahh...next visit!
For desserts, there are only 4 items in the menu and we ordered 2 to share. I am totally in love with the desserts we ordered. Water chestnut dessert served with sliced jackfruit (RM5) was refreshing and not too sweet.
Mango is substituted with Durian here. Our 2nd dessert, the ultimate Durian Glutinous Rice in Coconut Milk (RM8) was served warm. I highly recommend this to durian lovers! It was really rice and tasty. Who could have guessed durian complemented sticky rice and coconut milk so well. It was yummy and next visit, I shall have one bowl all for myself.
The total bill came up to RM183.50 including drinks and taxes. Not exactly street food prices but reasonable for the location of the place. The do have other interesting dishes in the menu like Thai sausages, noodle soup, pad thai and etc...and am eager to go back to try it out soon.

You guys really know where to find good food. You have to recommend me a few good place to eat when I come home in January :)
Jun: Nah, there are more Thai restaurants in Bangsar so your mum might be going to a different one. This one is on street food, something unique cos most Thai restaurants selling high-end stuffs. I find Thai dining here very pricey.
icook4fun: You coming home in Jan? Great. You can always count on us (M'sian food bloggers) for recommendations.
i went to this place to do CCTV and sound system before, wonder will they give me a discount? haha^^

unkaleong: Really? In Jalan Alor???? This one i think you will be disappointed cos it doesn't taste like the real thing.
Penang Tua Pui: Haha..challenge? No la...we sama-sama go makan.
Nic: Haha..i can see that you are feasting every weekend.
fbb: Ahem...not only 2 whole trotters but other dishes and rice as well....certainly more than enuff to feed 6. No meh?
The glossy skin of the pork trotters look so pretty huh...
Hahaha one will never be sick of Thai food with all the vibrant flavours ;) But 2 pork leg for 4 ladies ...*speechless*...The durian pulut remind me of Lat comic where they eat collect the durian in wee hours, mix the flesh with santan and have it with rice or sumthing.
Btw, judging from the photo (dunno which post ady), it's hard to believe you are a person who loves crabs so much and able to telan 2 trotters :S and still able to keep fit.
surely this Hatyai people will kill the Malaysian street food pedlars soon ! as 4 of you have given the orange light before the green !
So many porky dishes!
mimid3vils: The pork was so shiny and delicious looking.
cokeworld citizen: Hmm..which photo you refering to? I think you must have mistaken someone else as me. Am NO way fit lor..hehe.
team BSG: Ermm..no Hatyai people cos it's owned by Malaysians, just read from The Star yesterday. That explains the Mui Choy Trotter!
tigerfish: Oink Oink!
Eh really? Dunno leh. All I remember was the Indian shop you drop by for some sweet indian snek.
Anyway...Long live Thai pork leg!!
Happy Birthday!
Cokeworld citizen: Ooo...drive for food video issit? Hahaha...ermm...by any chance you mistaken teckiee as me ar?
