TENJI JAPANESE BUFFET @ Solaris Mont' Kiara

UPDATES!!! (8 January 2009)
From the feedback and comments received from friends and readers following their visit to Tenji, sad to learn that their service and food quality deteriorated in such a short time. Seems like they could not cope with the huge crowd with their current lunch promotion. Was even told that their lunch promotion is fully booked, so I advise you NOT to try your luck by walking in. Do scroll down and read the comments left by my readers. Anyway, to be fair to them, they are new and also picked the wrong time to have that kind of promotion (holiday season). I hope things will pick up again once the lunch promo is over as I really enjoyed my dining experience there.

++++++

I received an SMS from my pal on Friday morning, yes, early morning!
PC210151

Immediately I informed my Makan Gang and two days later, here we are at Tenji Japanese Buffet Restaurant located at Solaris Mont' Kiara, right above Cold Storage. Tenji Japanese Buffet Restaurant was opened only a week ago and currently running a promo lunch which is priced at RM29.90++ for 1st hour, additional RM10 for the subsequent hour or RM49.90 ++ for the entire lunch session; meaning from 11.30 a.m. till 4.00 p.m. VERY VERY GOOD DEAL and you will get what I mean after you scroll down to see the pictures of the buffet spread.
1

The restaurant was HUGE, and was told that the restaurant occupies around 30,000 sq feet including al fresco dining area which I find would be perfect at night. Nah..too warm for me during the day. I enquired beforehand at the reception and the friendly lady told me that I am welcomed to take pictures of the buffet spread. With over 200 dishes, I quickly went round snapping photos randomly. Are you ready to drool????
2

I have lost count on the number of sweet coconut drink I had. Yes, they are free flow and you can have as many as you want. They also have other cold drinks such as fruit juices and iced lemon tea.
3

For those who prefer something warm, there are quite an extensive choices of floral tea to choose from; calendula, lavendar, rose buds, blueberry, forest berries and etc.
4

My Makan Gang, and that includes Hubby is extremely crazy of oysters. Imagine our excitement when the sight of the big fat juicy fresh oysters lying on the bed of ice welcomes us the moment we stepped into the dining area. I will talk more on the oysters later.5

The sashimi selection was pretty good too. We were very happy with the thick and chunky cuts of the salmon, swordfish and tuna.
6

Octopus sashimi...I don't fancy this rubbery creature but somehow the tentacles look so gorgeous.
7

Thanks to KY, I went to google for the name of this clam and found out that it is called Hokkigai.
8

I have never tried having scallop raw before and I find it pretty good.
9

I love sushi but when it comes to buffet, this is something that I would skip as they can fill up my tummy pretty fast. I couldn't resist taking a few pictures of them so here goes:10
11
13
14

Apart from the variety of cooked food at the buffet table, there are many hot dishes available upon request. Each table was given 2 clips with your table number on it. For example, if you want grilled salmon head, all you need to do is to put your clip into the little bowl with the 'salmon head' tag and they will cook it and bring it over to you. Those who have been to Jogoya would know what I mean. 17

Hot udon or cold soba? I didn't try either of them cos I was saving my stomach space for sashimi.
16

Seafood and meat for teppanyaki....again, this is where you will need your pin to place your order.
18

Hot food corner was pretty impressive too. We loved the Clams in Superior Stock. The broth was rich with the clam essence. I ended up scooping the broth instead of the clams.
20

Japanese snail...had to eat cos no cutlery was provided to dig the flesh out.
21

Crabs!!!! How could I resist? I took a piece of the mud crab cooked in marmite sauce. Errm..just took a bite and decided not worth my effort dirtying my hand since the oysters were shouting for my name.
22

There is a western corner too but it failed to ignite my interest. The early batch gets to savour the juicy roasted lamb roll. Mint sauce that goes with the lamb was good. Once the roll was gone, it was replenished with seafood pizza. So please be early!
25

Desserts, ohh..glorious dessert. Those with sweet tooth will be so delighted with their variety of desserts. Impossible for me to sample each and every of the mousse and puddings and tiramisu they have...sigh.
26

Mochis....so many flavours, spoilt with choices.
27

Cakes and pastry.....we were seated right in front of this glass display. Everything looks so good but I didn't get to try any cos I was sooo stuffed.
29

They serve Haagan-Daz ice-cream and I was so lucky cos all my favourite flavour was available; Macadamia Nuts, Greentea and Strawberry Cheesecake!
30

Dip dip dip...the breadstick and fruits for the chocolate fountain.
31

Now, let's talk about the food. My first plate of sashimi......oishi oishi. I simply love the chunky cut of the sashimi. Satisfying!
32

This was the first piece of oyster I had. It was huge! Palm-sized to be exact.
33

Another photo taken before I glide it down my throat. Ooooo.....so sweet and smooth.
34

Just when I thought the one I had was huge, Hubby took one even bigger. Hubby placed it next to a spoon as comparison. Not that I am complaining, but I find the size was TOO big. Usually I could easily take one dozen oysters at one go but after my 3rd gigantic piece of oyster, I couldn't bring myself to swallow anymore of it. One my of Makan Gang member had 10 pieces!!! Salute salute!!

35

Prawn sashimi was also my first try. Sweet and it has a slight bounciness to it. Tasted very rich too. Eventhough it was tiny, I stopped at my 2nd piece.
36

Makan Gang was searching high and low for Miso soup. Funny...they don't serve Miso soup. There are creamy seafood soup at the western corner but it was the double boiled Chinese soup that caught my interest. Three types were available: Herbal soup, Ginseng soup and Cordyceps soup. The Cordyceps Soup tasted really good. I am still having a bit of cough and sorethroat and the soup was really soothing so I ended up having two helpings.
37

Ayu fish...never heard of this before but Makan Gang said it tasted bland. Not my choice of food so I didn't even bother to try.
38

From the grilled corner, I took a piece of grilled corn, shisamo and deep fried soft shell crab. All were yummy!!!

39
For dessert, I only had these. Sad right? So many variety of desserts but my tummy was telling me "STOP STOP STOP"!!!
40

The black sesame mochi was not too bad, do try. Skip the honeydew pudding though.
41

We initially planned to stay for the whole session but before our 2nd hour ended, we were already stuffed so all in, we only paid RM39.90++ per pax. Good deal especially when the amount of oysters and ice-cream (I had 4 scoops) we had already covered the amount we paid.

The lunch promo is valid till 15 January 2009 so do take advantage of it!

OMG that oyster is HUGE!! LOL I don't think I have the courage to eat an oyster that big. Btw I think the price for the lunch is a bargain, considering the quality and quantity of the spread. Hopefully when I get the chance to go back to Malaysia, I can visit the place. Thanks again for the extensive coverage =)

Selba said...

Wow!!! Japanese buffet! The food looks really really really good! *slurp*

That's really great deal especially with the promo lunch which so darn cheap... Oh my... I really wish I could be there!

Oh finally they r open! I heard they claimed to be the biggest Jap buffet...

Looking at the extensive range of food available, 4 hours of eating time will not be enough... haha

UNBELIEVABLE! This spread is worth every cent! I love that spotlight on the oysters - definitely a winner! Is that century egg sushi I spy? How fascinating!

Precious Pea said...

Linda: The next time i go, I think I shall stick to the small oysters so that I can keep track of my intake. This one is to gigantic to me. You have to take a few bites to finish it off. I prefer putting everything in my mouth at one go. Seems like I was the only one complaining yesterday, the boys enjoyed it so much.

Selba: Good deal right?? We planning for a revisit before the promo ends. Any plan of visiting KL soon?

mochasourcream: I don't think i could stay for 4 hours. My tummy screaming for me to stop after feasting for an hour. Simply too many dishes to try....need to make few more visits to try everything.

KY: Thanks KY. I googled for it and found that it is called Hokkigai in Jap.

Kampungboycitygal: Call and ask, they might serve roasted turkey on Christmas????

Precious Pea said...

550ml of faith: Yes, century egg sushi...cute eh?

j2kfm: Hahaha..when are you coming down to KL again? Maybe we can have mini-gathering there.

penang tua pui: Hehehe..envy?? Any nice Jap buffet in Penang ar?

baby octopus: I walked around and spotted a nice Balinese restaurant. In fact, most of the eateries there have nice interior design. Must dine there more often now.

jason: I didn't know you like Japanese!!!!! When?

Calvin: The lunch promo includes weekend since I went yesterday and got the offer. Hahaha..actually not mini but my friend also heard from her friend, albeit the inaccurate info.

mel^^mel: Yes, valid on weekends but don't think so for public holidays.

Pam: Wahh...the food not digested yet and you already planning to return?? Hahaha!

Borneo Falcon: Come to KL quick!

cokeworld citizen: I hope they will maintain the standard lor.

aiwei: Do call to book. It was packed by the time i left at 2 p.m.

rokh: Yes and quick!

henry: Hahaha...lighting effect. I don't remember seeing any empty shell except on our table. Nope..don't think they have dessert only option.

worldwindows: Their western and chinese variety also quite a lot to choose from. Just that I didn't have enuff stomach space to try all.

My question here is:
do they serve these kind of foods during the weekdays eg. 31/12/2008?

BaBy OcTopUs said...

They won't be serving the promo during the both eve and also actual day (x'mas & new year). I just booked for this friday. I think it applies to weekends too.

Precious Pea said...

NJoe: Lunch promo valid for weekend except public holiday. Can ask when you call to book.

tummythoz: Lots of eateries there. Spotted a few worth trying.

mycoffee: Do call to book before you go.

christy: I don't have any idea on the selection of food cos that was my first outing.

Baby Octopus: Thanks for the info! Yes, so difficult to get through their line. Enjoy your lunch this Fri.

Precious Pea said...

nic: Hahaha..if as big as your face, i also dare not eat. Jelak to the MAX! Ermm..with the lunch promo, worth going.

ling239: Yes lor..that is why i heavily recommend the lunch promo. Just a big plate of sashimi already cover back the price paid. I sat for 2 hours only..paid about RM45 nett. Very 'dai'. Go weekend la....and don't eat breakfast.

sc: Hahaha...so are you going with Alicia? Please say hi to her and Merry Christmas to you both!

Just got back from lunch. Food was alright but coconut was not. I need to wait or all of us there need to wait for 1 hour for the refills. That is the only set back~! Sigh!

and yes, oysters a bit geli cause too large~ lol!!

sc said...

hey pea, we went today and we rather unpleased by 2 things. 1. the staff were not very prepared for the crowd, hence cooked food was rather 'messy'. 2. they dont refill some food! we were sorely disappointed that they didnt refill the coconut (and about 5 more other dishes)..they were like 'sorry, no more, no stock'. this is a buffet right? :(. that aside, the sashimi and oysters were fresh, guess having that and lots of haagen daz makes it worthwhile :p

ricky yap said...

to me it is not worth it. sushi is not fresh, not much choice, steam fish is not fresh and tasteless...the only good thing that is good are shashimi & oyster

seafoodlover said...

hi pea,
does tenji has those small gas stove to heat the pot of soup/noodles or to cook the raw sashimi like in jagoya?

Precious Pea said...

seafoodlover: Yes, they do have the 'candle pot' just like jogoya.

ricky yap, sc and baby octopus : I heard the same complain too..guess shouldn't go during holiday season. Am waiting to go early Jan, hopefully the crowd will die down a bit.

furkids, daphne, noobcook and bbo: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too!

unkaleong: Aiyoo..better call to book before you go.

simon: Haha...got oysters so sure fast!

iamthewitch: Hope you enjoy it.

will go for the food very soon after your review that my friend just send me.

Calvin Kong said...

finally i went to Tenji..

overall.. the experience is bad..

the food presentation gotten worst from the photos i saw from various blog..

lack of manpower.. service is bad.. we technically have to go fetch our own cook-to-order food or be prepared to eat COLD cook-to-order dish..

1 hr into the lunch session.. they couldn't cope with the demand.. and started withdrawing many of the cook dish.. and by almost 2hr.. 70% of the choices were gone.. i wonder what i get to eat if i come 2hrs later or stay for the 4 hrs..

food tasted bland... lesser choice..

jogoya may not be great nowadays as what it used to be.. but tenji is worst.. if RM40++.. i guess is pretty ok for the quality and service.. but tenji normal pricing is equiv to jogoya.. i will pick jogoya anytime...

anyone got exact phone number??

Thanks

Elepiggy said...

Most horrible place ever. Went there today and they said that they're fully booked until the 15th for lunch session. Ask them why their phone cannot be reached and they say their "system is down" without even an apology. So don't bother calling cause they're not even bothered to fix their stupid phone. I tried for 3 days in a row including night time.
If you haven't made a reservation you can forget about the promo. How to even make a reservation when you can't even contact them?? And they should just take down the promo banner cause its not "valid" anyway. At least they can let people know that they're fully book until the 15th cause I saw alot of people being turned away due to this ignorance. Lousy service. Jogoya is waaaaaaaay better.

Caryn said...

Agree with you...
There is totally invalid.
No matter how many times u call, even if u walk in.
you also cant make reservation.
Because their reservation is fully booked until 15 January, so better not to waste time to call and go there. The number 1700 is correct, only theirs service. If no more place, then just do an announcement to public that the restaurant is full. Dont make us like fool then go there and turn back with disappointed. Forget about it! Have a nice day.. ^^

Precious Pea said...

Anonymous and doreakachu: Don't go!! Read the comments from elepiggy and caryn and you will understand why.

elepiggy and caryn: My blogger friend went today and got turned away too. So sad things turning out like this when I thought I discovered a gem. Am not surprised about them not picking up the phone. Even I had that problem..took me two days.

munyee said...

hi there.. i guess i'm one of the lucky ones then to be able to book for 13th lunch based on all the frustrated comments.. i called at night around 10++ on the 5th maybe that time the crowd was less so got people entertain me.. but that was also after a few tries...

i think all the rush is caused by precious pea's alluring photos :P

Caryn said...

munyee: You are really lucky, I had tried fews day, sometimes it engaged by operator, keep listening music there finally it say bye bye to me too!
It's ok. Got promotion sure full of people! I understand...^^

wow how u manage to snap so many pics of the tenji display food..

i got scolded by the chef few times for snapping some pics =_= very fierce chef.

Maybe too many ppl now so they can't control the pic snapping anymore? I went there end of November, 08 when they opened and started their promotion (that time last until 5th dec only). It's back now i am suprised! lol..

so sad wish i could take more pics

taufulou said...

precious pea, definitely you have attracted alot of customer to that place, with your blog circulating to all my friends..heee...I did try call a few times, sames as all other people, engage all the wayy..

your pictures in the blog is definitely attractive and great description..Thanks for sharing~

I just received an email from my colleague just now..saying that the promotion had extended to 15th Feb 2009...
is that true?
due to overwhelming response

Precious Pea said...

munyee and caryn : Maybe they still in process of hiring a receptionist? Hehehe...well lucky you! Since they are open till 2.30 a.m. for supper...i guess that's the best time to call for booking?

taufulou: Hehe..i even received the email from a staff and friends who unknowingly clueless I am the source. Aii...i don't know if i got that kind of power..but i hope am not the culprit lor. Anyway...where you heard the extended promo from? I keen to go again despite the bad reviews cos one big plate of sashimis and 6 big scoops of ice-cream already worth the money paid.

Precious Pea said...

Miu: I asked the lady at the reception if I could take pic of the buffet spread and she happily told me no problem at all. I think i know which chef..the CHINESE guy right? I told him off that i was given permission to take photo of the food. If next time you go and people tell you off, just reply "What a pity, i only take pic of food i appreciate and find good, pity the chef, no wonder not famous"! LOL!! Am I cocky or what??

taufulou said...

pea, i jus went to tenji japanese buffet restaurant...

Quite disappointed wif the food and service there...was terribly bad...

The oysters were so unfresh and the food were not refilled...all left empty...

The workers there were not enough for the crowd...

Tenji is worst than jogoya 10x...jogoya is much better and more choices...i'm sure i won't go there again

waijane: Sigh, so sad to hear that as I was planning to return for another round of feast.

Hi, was reading your blog and decided to go for dinner buffet. As wat you mentioned on the 8th January 2009, this Tenji Restaurant are getting worst with the services and the food finish (especially sushi),they don't insist to replenish. If compare with the price that i am paying, I believed Joyoga or even Shogun even have the best quality of food and services. At least we don't have to rush for the food. And something happen yesterday nite, the waiter accidently pour a bowl of soup over a customer hand. Pity the customer. To those of you planning to go for Tenji for a try, maybe wait till the crowd are not that much at this moment.

Not only the food was not replenished, the food had little choices and variety...

If u guys wanna to go for buffet, choose jogoya rather than tenji...

Tenji is not worth it for a try...
Jogoya has much choices and the services there are good...

I called them this evening, and I was told that they are fully booked till 15 January. After that, their so called "extended promotion" is RM49.90. So sad, cos I will be returning to the States on the 16 of January!

celine: Am surprised! Dinner also that bad huh? I tot this happen only during lunch.

eelynn: Wow, you even manage to get his personal handphone no?? Cool and many thanks.

waijane: Actually it was really good the day i went, much better than Jogoya. I guess give them another 2-3 months before going to try again.

charis: Ohh...you mean rm49.90 regardless how many hours issit? That is still a good deal, provided they improve on the food quality and service of course!

just had the lunch buffet at tenji yesterday. Overall its just OK. Not having much appetite when there for lunch.. Could have been caused by the sashimi & huge and yucky oyster i had when first reach :P .. my friend commented that jogoya more choices? is that true?

the new promotion for the buffet is RM49.90+ for the entire lunch session from 16jan to 15feb. starting from 11.30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

if you can't get through the hotline, i suggest you sms your name, hp number, time, pax, date to 016-9209008. they will reply your sms with a booking number. hope that helps :)

is the promo applicable on weeekend?thx

InkBlot said...

apparently they now have this Chinese New Year promo at 55+.

trick is to call really early at 11, before they switch on the pesky tele-operator system.

otherwise after 6. i made a few calls during those times and they got through.

What's the promotion period for CNY?

Went to Tenji yesterday and i feel so upset as i expected more.. The food quality is bad...The shashimi section stinks... And food is all over the counter... the staff efficiency is so bad that ive to wait for so long for my fish and went to checked and find out that.. they didnt even collect the clips from the bowl. And the staff started to clear up the kitchen at 9.30pm... and they didnt even know how to smile...oh can i just say that they are rude... Its completely different from my experience dining in Jogoya.

Unlike all the negative stories I read, I found my experience at Tenji to be very good! I went during the lunch session on 31 January 2009, plates were cleared promptly, food was replenished fast and our food orders came to our tables quite soon. I find the price RM49.90+ to be a real good deal!

You can read about it at my blog entry here...

nothing great... the tempura is bad... the unagi is really bad... and not to mention the rice in the sushi which seemed like they have been sitting there for like days from the taste!

guess i won't be heading back to tenji. seriously below average for the price that they charge... better off sticking to zipangu if you want seriously good japanese food. two thumbs down from me for tenji that's for sure...

To all readers, Tenji will definitely not an ideal place for dining. I went on 20/03/09 for the Buffet of RM49.90/pax. The Bill for 2pax were RM 99.80 + Service Charge (10% x Ori.Price of RM 154) + Gov.Tax (5% x Ori.Price of RM 154) "PS: RM 77 ori. price for lunch session per pax"! The TOTAL : RM 122.90. I deeply felt cheated and it seemed like a !@#$ trick they used for consumers. And dun expect much for their explanation. The cashier told me, they are practising like Airasia, the s. charge & gov. tax will always based on the Ori. price. OMG ... can anyone believe it!

Same case, i took supper on 21 March at Tenji. The tax was supprising.Suppose 39.90 supper should become 45++, but when i see the bill, it states 53++.And the foods is really bad and less choices compare to my 1st visit at February.
I will not consider to visit again.

To those who complained about the tax issue, i have check with a tax expert and yes, the 5% and 10% is based on original price and now the promo price.

Hi, Precious Pea, few months passed, i wonder how is Tenji's food n quality n service now... since i had read d comments from others, seems like this restaurant not really sincere to customers. I'm not really like the way they run a business, playing tricks..... i won't recommend to my friend as i concern d business ethic as well as quality of food...
Do u have others good Japanese Buffet restaurant recommended?

Btw, i like all the post u have done n d photos u took, really good n put in effort... keep it up!
