PEA'S MEAT FLOSS SWISS ROLL....BLUEKK!

My recipe book on "Elegant Swiss Roll" has been sitting on the bookshelf collecting dust for more than a year now. I thought it would be great to spend my time baking since I am so free at home. For those who doesn't know me well, baking is certainly NOT my cup of tea. I don't mind spending few hours brewing prawn stock or a day preparing a roast duck, but when it comes to baking...I really dread the whole process especially the measuring and the cleaning part!

The only reason I bought this recipe book was for this recipe: Meat Floss Swiss Roll. I usually get mine from Bread Story for RM3.20 per piece. Sure looks yummy, isn't it?? The photo was taken straight from the recipe book and certainly not my creation.....why? Because mine turned out to be ... ahem...very different...

Something gone wrong somewhere...my swiss roll turned out to be a thick slab of crepe!!! It was like a layer of buttery dough!

I don't know what went wrong as I followed the instructions from A-Z....sigh...well, at least my butter cream turned out good.

Close-up of my failure...bluek!! The 'crepe' was doughy and tasteless. One word...AWFUL!!!

Even my ever-supportive dad said so......sigh.....it went straight to the rubbish bin!

I went to Bread Story the next day for a piece of their yummy Meat Floss Swiss Roll to soothe my disappointment. That's it.....the recipe book will remain back to the bookshelf for a long, long time.

the cake is of sponge cake type? :p i've never managed to make any sponge cake successful except the one we made at our NZ ice-cream class that also together with Sifu FBB lol

babekl: You should try Bread Story version...very soft and light. Ahh..with sifu around, just can't go wrong.

RO: Best of all, he doesn't read my blog so he won't make a fuss of putting up this photo! Hahah!

what flour did you use for the cake mix ? Sometimes the recipes are not very accurate. I wouldn't dare embark on such difficult bake too :)

Aiyorr...so cute lah your dad's face, lol! Yes, i like those mini rolls from Bread Story.
Baking sponge cakes can be tricky for those not so-familiar with the method. Have to be very careful when folding-in the flour into the whisked egg+sugar concoction - don't let any air escape else yr cake won't be light, fluffy & spongey!

i have come across a lot of failure following those recipe book on peanut butter cheese cake, choco cheese cake. it is really a big waste of ingredients and time and electric when come across failure. aiks.

but at least, we tried :P

Kakakaka...not bad actually, you managed to roll sponge. I tired making swiss roll but the sponge cracks once I roll it =(
From swiss roll become layer cake.. hehehehe..

Pea, I notice you used the dough hook to beat the mixture. That might be the reason as not enough air goes into the batter.

My personal opinion, usually the recipe book will not get a good result, a lot of bloggers out there got better recipe to follow.

well, as the saying goes, failure is the mother key to success. i dread baking too as it always didn't turn out right (for me at least) and i have to wash so many utensils too.

coffeesncookies: The recipe says normal flour only. But you are rite...at times, we need to adjust the recipe a bit.

PureGlutton: Maybe I was too ambitious...but then again, I can't even bake a good basic butter cake! Sigh!

icook4fun: The photos i posted actuially for the butter creaM. For the swiss roll, the flour was folded into the egg mixture.

I'm pretty sure you need self raising flour or normal flour + baking powder for cakes to rise. I think that's where the recipe went wrong, the sponge cake looks like pudding coz the cake did not rise. I came across a few recipes with this mistake too.
Don't give up, it's not your fault! Blame it on the recipe.

but the light cheese cake recipe is good. i adapted it from somewhere. try lar try lar. try to beat the egg white til stiff :)

reminds me of the steam cake I made tak jadi. I think you missed out the baking powder.

OMG!!!!!!!! this is too farnee la, pea!!! yeah, recipe books can be really tricky sometimes. no matter how careful one is with the steps, it just wont turn out the same. burn the book and roast chicken wings with the fire! ok, a bit too violent d..hehe

Sometimes better just to buy the product if cheap, although I myself also attempt to make something if I think I can improve it.

Haha.. somehow i think is not easy to achieve good swiss roll. I've tried an egg separated from this same book.. Haiz... The cake shrinks!
